ABOUT
Studio Henry Baumann creates pieces that are simultaneously understood as interior objects and works of art. In his practice, functionality and artistic expression merge into an independent formal language.
Baumann does not see himself as a creator, but as a shaper of conditions within which forms emerge on their own. He works with the formative forces of the world, engaging the same principles that shape our natural environment. In this way, objects arise that translate the creative movement of nature into form.
Never defining the final compositions through preliminary sketches, Henry Baumann’s shapes derive directly from the materials themselves, using their inherent qualities to create new forms.
The objects emerge from curiosity about a material and its manufacturing process – a process that develops through reproduction, mutation, and selection. Coincidence plays a vital role in this unfolding. Baumannis fascinated by production methods in which he sets the stage for creation, yet the actual form arises by chance or through the intervention of environmental forces.

Colour, too, is an important element in Baumann’s work. He enjoys developing his own chromatic worlds as much as collaborating with clients to realise their visions.
“When I’m trying out materials, testing their boundaries, I start with an initial idea,” he says. “Attempting to make it, I repeatedly fail. Through this process I embark on a journey without knowing the destination, not knowing where it will take me. This journey is an adventure I enjoy – and one in which I also suffer a lot.”The studio’s practice is guided by an accompanying attitude: by consciously stepping back and allowing physical processes to unfold, a living dynamic emerges in which idea and formation are inseparably intertwined.
In this sense, creation becomes an act of observation – a collaboration between the human being and the forces that have shaped humanity itself, a dialogue sustained by reverence. The creative process is understood as a sequence of creation, selection, and reproduction, resulting in a continuous evolution – a cycle in which each piece is a unique outcome, constantly developing further.
